My Educational Philosophy in Depth
I believe learning should be fun, interactive, thought-provoking, innovating, and relatable. I believe every child can learn and learns at his or her own pace. Everyone learns differently. Each child should be treated with kindness and dignity regardless of their behaviors, disabilities, religion, economic status or color of their skin. I believe children should learn that there are different perspectives, beliefs, cultures, and experiences everywhere; yet we are all unique and special individuals. Respect and kindness must be given. I believe children should know and learn about their own cultures as well as their classmates. They should be taught to celebrate and embrace diversity and be considerate of others. Likewise, my students should expect nothing less from me. As their teacher, I must esteem diversity in my classroom and show concern for all my students.
I believe my classroom should be a safe and nurturing place where each student has opportunities to learn and grow. I will stimulate learning by encouraging creativity, hands on learning, and offer leadership roles to the children. I believe the classroom should highlight learning by doing, sharing ideas, developing relationships, and cooperative learning. I believe it should be evident to everyone who enters my classroom that literacy is a priority. My goal is to inspire children to be lifelong readers by creating an environment where reading is enjoyed, shared, and enlightened. I believe reading should evoke discovery and creativity. I believe teaching should be student-centered, constructivist theory, where each child actively participates in learning.
I believe using literacy as a component to increase student engagement, focus, independence, and love for reading. Not only that, but organizing book clubs, programs, and activities to focus on literacy is essential. For example, a book exchange club would be a great way for students to trade their favorite books with children from other schools and other countries. In addition, I believe it is important to promote reading outside of classroom and have incentives to encourage children to read more while they are away from school. I want to help prepare my students for the next grade level and be proficient readers; therefore, I must assess throughout the year using guided reading and small group time, for example, to target areas of concern and offer support to help students improve.
I believe children should learn how to use technology as a resource to increase reading level. Technology allows students to travel to other countries, tour museums and go on field trips virtually. There’s now a fast way to become famous. Using technology, a classroom of fourth graders can communicate with astronauts out in space. Technology offers more innovative opportunities for children to explore our world, and should be included in the curriculum. I believe students should not only learn the basic core subjects, but visual art, drama, theater, dance, and music – to name a few – should be included in their daily academics. I believe in arts integration (AI) education.
In conclusions, as a teacher I must understand that my goal is to provide students with the necessary tools to be their best selves. I must intentionally motivate them to enjoy reading, learning, and pursue it. I believe it is my responsibility to encourage children to be critical thinkers, read daily, be lifelong readers. It is an honor to cultivate, nurture, and inspire young minds to be the change this world desperately needs.
